Almost 80% of all Purse Seine tuna (both FAD- and Free School) in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean is caught in the Pacifical PNA Zone.

The only ocean with all commercial tuna species in the GREEN! This is not by chance. The rigid sustainability management measures and the ‘Vessel Day Scheme’ implemented by the PNA, have been key contributors.

TRUTH: Mercury in tuna is NOT toxic, selenium neutralizes…

There are no proven cases of negative effects of human tuna consumption related to mercury (Hg), instead, the positive effects of eating tuna are well documented. When consuming tuna, the mercury level is neutralized by the selenium (Se) level in tuna, making it harmless for us.

But if you still want to guarantee your tuna comes with the lowest mercury concentration, ask your supplier for proof that it was caught in PNA waters, studies show our region’s tuna is the clear winner!

Fishing license fees provide on average 37% of total PNA governments revenues, for Tokelau even 98% . In the long term, this climate change effect will be catastrophic, reducing much-needed revenue for our nations’ education, health care, and infrastructure.

Small Island Nations, Large Ocean States!

Astonishing to see the difference in land and water surface of the Pacifical PNA countries, but even more remarkable to realize these small island nations successfully maintain and guard the healthy state of 50% of the world’s skipjack, which fills most tuna cans.

Sustainable management is THE key driver for the Pacifical PNA people, it’s about their survival. But also ours!

Health is a human right

Also for tuna crews and observers. The potential risk of them COVID-19 contracting and/or transmitting it on tuna fishing vessels is one that neither they, their families, or our tuna nations should be exposed to. Vaccinations are an crucial step to keep our people at sea and on the islands safe.

It is real good to see our Pacifical PNA and other ministers highlighting this need and making a loud call for the prioritization of the vaccination of observers, fishing crew, and seafarers as frontline workers against COVID-19.

“We want to see all of our people back out there, earning their livelihoods and being able to take care of their families, but even more crucially, we must ensure their health and safety is protected from COVID19,” said Fiji Minister for Fisheries, Honourable Semi Koroilavesau.

MSC’s tuna future in the hands of LAGGARDS!

The Pacifical PNA nations have been more than 10 years on a successful journey to make and keep the WCPO the GREENEST ocean for all tuna species ( 800,000 MT of PNA catch is MSC Eligible).
By putting the future of this most successful MSC fishery into the hands of the WCPFC, an RFMO that decides based on CONSENSUS, and has its progress continuously obstructed by a few laggards, is a slap in the face of our people, front runners in managing 25% of world’s tuna towards sustainability.
